FTP Uploads, .WMV Encoding, and Contribution Editing Questions. |
If answers to these questions are somewhere on the site, please let me know.
1. I want to upload my cable tv show episodes through FTP. Do I upload them to movie-uploads.archive.org, or is there a different site for TV shows?
2. I read that: "All movies must be contained in their own directories." Does this mean I have to create a directory that looks different from this one:
http://www.archive.org/details/YourIdentifierName?
If so, how would I do this?
3. For RealPlayer, I read that archive.org supports two bitrates: 32Kbps-192Kbps for modem and ISDN users plus 256Kbps-450Kbps for DSL and cable-modem users. Does that also mean that I would have to upload a .wmv file at 450kbps or less for it to stream in Windows Media Player? (I'd like to upload .wmvs at 500kbps.)
4. Do your servers support .wmv "optimized" fast streaming as described here:

5. I uploaded a file through OurMedia that is found here

and later changed my email address and password. When I tried to edit the file, it said "You do not have sufficient privileges to access this page." Is that because of the email/password change I made? If not, how would I edit my contribution, like linking it to a Creative Commons license?

1. upload them via following the "Contributions" link in the navigation lines on
http://www.archive.org
this is our new system that all movies should be using now
(forget movies-uploads -- that's the old system 8-)
2. the subdirs now gets setup for you. you just add files to the subdir of your item.
3. i think bitrates vary for connections' abilities. but we aim for 64kb and 256kb bitrates for streaming (with our .mp4 files that get autogenerated from certain formats like MPEG1, MPEG2, MotionJPEG). you could upload two or more .wmv files with whatever bitrates you like and let the users choose 8-)
4. i don't know. but usually .wmv files that i view at IA do not need to be fully downloaded and start playing/streaming quickly (i use winXP with WMPlayer10)
5. yes, changing email addresses with IA accounts will cause (unfortunately) the item to not be editable by you anymore. we don't have a good solution for this right now.
for now, you can send an email to "qa at archive dot org"
and mention your item identifier and your prior and current emails for them to switchover the identifier to your new addy.

Hi Tracey,
Are you saying that it is no longer possible to upload through an FTP client like FreshFTP? Does the "contributions" way allow you to resume an upload if it fails? If not, I would really prefer to use an FTP client because of this "resume" feature.

If I can use FTP, I would need to know what subdirectory to use.

I hope you can look into this for me. Are you using dialup to connect? I've found that when using dialup with Windows "Fast Streaming, the stream begins almost immediately; without it often takes over a minute.

new system uses FTP just like the old one.
it just uses a much easier and faster path for making a new item. so resumption should work.
2) try the new system. it's pretty obvious
dialup to connect? i'm a webmaster! 8-p
DSL at home 8-)
there's pretty much one of us (me) here coding right now, so there's little chance of us changing wmv format handling anytime soon (we constantly get suggestions for better and different formats (eg: .3gp) but we're only a "little shop" so we don't often have much time to try out new video tricks...)
anyway, i think things should mostly work just fine.
if you're very concerned about being friendly to video-watching folks on dialup, i suggest outputting a MPEG1, MPEG2, or MotionJPEG format for your film so that we'll make the .mp4 streaming for you (which use RTSP and darwin streaming server) so the small rez mp4 should work well for dialup.
